Most of the touristy places in Guam looked like ghost towns due to the swine flue panic. Our hotel's water park was equally deserted. While there were a handful of people in the wavepools and water slides, there never seemed to be anyone on the dreaded "Manta" ride. I decided to give it a try. After all, how scary could a ride in a water park be, right?

I did my share of adrenaline junkie stunts in my "Youth in Asia" travel days: train surfing in India, boxing in Thailand, solo parachuting in Quebec, running of the bulls in Spain, etc. This was spookier partly because no one else was ever on the slide, partly because it was so run down, and mostly because the only thing preventing you from a nasty drop over the side is a six-inch ridge. I was sure I was about to die when my legs touched the curb at the apex. It was so scary I had to try it over and over again.
