#48. Relaxation Culture

I slave away in a university classroom most weekends but I manage to slip in a little bit of Japanese relaxation culture during the week. Zipping from Tokyo to Shimoda in a little over two hours, JR’s Super View Odoriko (named after

kawabata’s first published story Izu no Odoriko, “The Dancing Girl of Izu”) is a fun ride: nice view, private seating compartments, a kid’s play room, and a beer, shochu, and ekiben in-train service to boot.

Izu is a nice place to spend a few weekday evenings. I like Kannon Onsen, a snazzy modern Ryokan with a foreigner friendly Okami (landlady).

The rooms and private baths in the new Pygmalion wing of the hotel have huge sliding windows which open up to reveal 240 degrees of forest, starry skies, and natural mountain setting.
